Townsville residents are being encouraged to observe Remembrance Day, albeit in a different way amid ongoing COVID-19 restraints.

With normal events slashed, Townsville City Council is presenting the commemoration ceremony in a live stream accessible by anyone, anywhere.

An official ceremony will be held at the Townsville War Cemetery attended by dignitaries and invitees only to be live streamed from 10.30am.

Townsville Sub Branch member Paul Willis said it was unfortunate that the national day reserved to honour and pay tribute to the fallen men and women of the Australian Defence Force wasn’t able to continue as usual, with multiple events usually taking place across the city.

However, he said the live stream provided a unique opportunity for even more people to observe the occasion by having the official ceremony live streamed on the big screen at all RSL’s in Townsville.

“We’re encouraging people to do three things – watch the live stream, take a moment away from work for a minute of silence and if you can go down and support the local RSLs,” Mr Willis said.

“Traditionally people will observe a minute silence but the live stream has allowed an extra educational element.”

Mr Willis said it was important to keep the spirit of Remembrance Day alive regardless of any changes to how it was delivered and encouraged people to take a moment to reflect on its meaning.

“I remember the people that I know,” he said.

“I consider the sacrifice that they make and it brings meaning to those who have gone before and especially back to the heritage of Remembrance Day in World War I.
