A NEW technology will make its way to a Far North supermarket for the first time, with the experience expected to be simpler and more convenient for consumers.

Woolworths Gordonvale will offer Scan & Go technology when it opens on Wednesday.

The technology allows you to pay for the items by scanning the barcodes through an app before you reach the checkout.

“It’s a smarter, faster way of shopping. It’s as simple as downloading an app. It’s very efficient,” Woolworths North Queensland operations manager Gary O’Donnell said.

“It also works through things like fruit and veg where they have scales and people can weigh it up.”

Mr O’Donnell said it had already been rolled out into Townsville but it was a first for the Far North.

“It won’t go into every store. We will review and see how successful it is, and we will make a decision on the back of that,” he said.

“The feedback is great, it’s very convenient and I know even my wife uses it. I can tell you first hand how she says it’s convenient for her.”

But that’s not the end of the new technology for the store.

“Customers will see an electronic ticketing system up and down the aisles,” he said.

“It’s a digital ticket which goes on to the shelf and updates through the system and reduces the paper ticketing we’ve got.”

The store has included a range of other sustainable features including solar panels, rainwater harvesting and use of recycled materials.

Woolworths Head of Property Development Andrew Loveday said the group was working to build more sustainable supermarkets.

“These efforts are not only good for the environment, but will also help us keep operating costs down so we can continue to offer great value.”

Woolworths Gordonvale Store Manager Geoffrey Pearcy said the new technology should appeal to customers.

“For added convenience, we’re also offering direct to boot service, which allows customers to collect their online grocery order without even leaving the car,” he said

The shopping centre will have seven specialty retailers and about 200 car parks.

Retailers include Gordonvale Noodle House, a pharmacist, Discount Drug Store, Cignall, JSL Phone Repairs with more to come.

“Our new store will be providing almost 100 local jobs, including 44 new team members to Woolworths, and 19 First Nation team members.”

Over the construction period 80 jobs were created.

Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt said the development would draw shoppers from as far south as Babinda.

“We know that future population growth of Cairns will be very much to the south of the city, and this new development will play an important role in servicing the area,” he said.

“It will also provide significant employment opportunities for the local community. Many of the new jobs created by this development will give young people in the Far North their first taste of working life.”

Woolworths Gabuda – Gordonvale’s opening hours are Monday to Friday (8am – 9pm) and Saturday/Sunday (8am-6pm).
