Why new trend is great news for nation’s go-to romantic destination

An explosion of love dedications at an iconic Far North jetty is a trend that’s starting to take off among young couples locking in their love by throwing away the keys.

AN explosion of love dedications on the Palm Cove jetty is cementing Cairns’ most northern suburb as the nation’s most romantic holiday destination.

Padlocks engraved with the initials of young couples in celebration of an everlasting commitment have recently taken off in popularity at the iconic tropical jetty.

Division 9 councillor Brett Olds was rapt to hear the trend had taken off and was quick to dismiss concerns surrounding potential damage to the infrastructure.

“It’s cool, I hope it takes off,” he said.

“I would not care if there was 10,000 locks on it, it would mean people taking photos and hash tagging Palm Cove.

“I don’t see a problem with it at all.

“I don’t think they would cause a weight issue, it’s a pretty sturdy structure.”

Cr Olds said he may even add his own padlock to the jetty celebrating his love for lifelong partner Sarah Olds.

Visiting tourist from Darwin Kyalea Young was at Palm Cove on Sunday and said the jetty reminded her of the famous Pont des Arts bridge across the Seine River in Paris.

“Everyone I see there comes down and reads the names and it’s really quite beautiful,” she said.
