Townsville teens spike local veterans at Cairns Cup Volleyball Tournament
To the chagrin of locals, the annual Cairns Cup Volleyball Tournament men’s division has been won by a group of youngsters from Townsville.

A group of last-minute lone wolves from Townsville spiked local hopes at the Cairns Cup annual volleyball tournament in the Cairns.
In a rough and tumble men’s final match between the Enrgy from Townsville and last year’s runner’s up, the Reserves from Cairns, the young guns took out the older, more experienced players at Trinity Bay Senior High School.
Initially it looked as though the Reserves, who were aged from 20s to 40s, would contain the teenagers’ exuberance when they took out the first set.
But the youngsters, who were aged from 14 to 18, regrouped with sound serves and blocking and a consistent approach which managed to foil the veterans’ hitting to snare the final three sets.
It was a gruelling match for the Reserves who took silver while the Reefer Sharks took the bronze.
Erngy captain Cooper Whaling, 16, said the team were stoked to beat such an experienced squad.
“We beat the Reserves and won three sets to one for the men’s competition,” Whaling said.
“Me and my friends from Townsville decided to come at the last minute as our premier Monsoons team weren’t attending.”
Reserves captain Chris Graham, said his team were run into the ground.
“Basically we ran out of puff,” he said,
“Those high school kids ran us ragged.”
Graham, 47, said despite the loss, his team played well.
Meanwhile the women’s competition was won by the Saltys which comprised players from the peninsula teams at the Mulgrave Road Youth Hall.
Salty’s player Tammy Collins, 38, said the team was ecstatic with their victory over Tofts who scored silver, while the Venom took bronze.
“It’s the first time we have all really played together,” she said.
“We beat Tofts three sets to one.”
Cairns Volleyball Association president Chris Poppell said the 2022 Cairns Cup had received a 50 per cent upswing in teams nominating to play from 2021.
“We had some incredible games,” he said.
