Short-lived wet season to hit all at once in Far North weather change

As the Far North is prepping for heavy rainfall, experts say the weather is favourable for cultivation. The temperature change will bring a much-needed cooldown for the region.

THE WET season was short-lived this summer in Cairns but the clouds are starting to form and FNQ can expect some rainy days ahead.

BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said we can expect “quite a change in the weather coming through Cairns over the rest of the week”.

“Basically, it’s the wet season happening in a very short space of time,” she said.

“From Wednesday there will be extra rainfall through the region, more along the coast than inland.

“There will be a minor temperature drop on Thursday when Cairns will experience a lot of rain and cloud cover.

“But, when we say cooler temperatures, instead of 30 degrees we’re looking at a drop to 28 or 29 degrees.”

“As the water picks up so does the humidity,” she said.

Limberlost Garden Centre’s nursery manager Rebecca Johnson said the change of seasons means the start of growing your veggie gardens.

“The last few weekends have been the start of people coming in to start planting things that grow more commonly in southern areas like tomatoes, kitchen herbs, cucumber and zucchini,” she said.

“Without the boiling heat, these are the more suitable weather conditions and people are taking advantage of it.”
