A two-storey house has been gutted by a fire in a central Cairns suburb.

The fire broke out just after 7am on Wednesday in Freshwater on Old Smithfield Road, prompting four crews and a number of police and paramedics to attend.

Large amounts of thick white and grey smoke could be seen billowing into the air, as crews worked to contain the blaze.

All occupants of the building accounted for.

A spokesman for Queensland Ambulance said all occupants of the building were safely evacuated, and there were no reports of serious injuries.

“We just have one male patient being assessed for possible injuries at this time,” he said.

Queensland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the building was well involved when emergency crews arrived.

“Firefighters from three crews, along with a senior officer, have been working to control the blaze,” she said.

“The fire looks to be restricted to the roof.”

It comes as a primary school-aged girl had been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire engulfed a second-story building near Innisfail just one day earlier.

Four fire crews and a number of paramedics arrived to the blaze at the rear of a residential building on Johnstone Road in Coquette Point just after 4.20am on February 10.

Four other patients were assessed on scene.
