Queensland Police has suspended the officer in charge at Aurukun following allegations of workplace misconduct.
Senior Sergeant Amit Singh was suspended after allegations of workplace misconduct were levelled against him by a fellow staff member at the station.
The Cairns Post understands the matter involves an alleged breach of the Queensland Police Service Integrity Framework and involves an “internal issue with staff”.
Sergeant Singh, who has spoken publicly about his childhood poverty in Fiji and his desire to work closely with Indigenous communities, was stationed at several Far North communities before becoming Officer-in-Charge at the Aurukun in mid-2022.
In a statement a QPS spokeswoman said: “The officer in charge of Aurukun Station was suspended from official duty from the Queensland Police Service on Thursday, May 9.”
The spokeswoman said Sergeant Singh “is subject to an ongoing Ethical Standards Command investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct”.
A source said Sergeant Singh had been a “polarising figure” in the community, has been committed to restoring law and order, and is also known for teaching Indigenous words to local police.
“He has been a very culturally aware officer. Probably the most culturally aware we have had,” a resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
“Investigations are continuing and the officer has not been charged with any criminal offences,” the QPS spokeswoman added.
