New non-stop flights to Fiji brings a $62m boost to Cairns over the next three years, connecting the Far North to 333 islands.

The inaugural flight touched down on Thursday in what is the first-ever non-stop connection to Fiji.

Fiji Airways chief executive managing director Andre Viljoen said the new service was a major step forward for tourism and regional travel.

“This new route is a significant milestone for Tropical North Queensland travellers and Australians eyeing a Fijian escape,” Mr Viljoen said.

“The 333 islands cater to all types of holidaymakers.”

In addition to boosting tourism, the new service will bring a $62m economic injection to the region over the next three years.

The direct route also strengthens global connectivity, making travel to North America faster and more convenient for Far North Queensland residents.

“We’re thrilled to provide faster one-stop connections to North America, saving three hours and skipping extra stopovers for Aussies in the region,” Mr Viljoen said.

“It’s a big boost in convenience and global connectivity.”

To celebrate the launch, traditional Fijian dancers welcomed passengers at Cairns Airport’s international terminal, adding to the festive atmosphere of the occasion.

Cairns Airport chief executive Richard Barker, who was adorned with a blue and white garland of flowers (known as a salusalu) during the ceremony, said the new route was a game-changer.

“Destinations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco are now just 16 hours away, slashing nearly three hours of travel time and eliminating the need for additional stops in other Australian ports,” he said.

Mr Barker also said the broader impact on tourism and trade was great news for the region.

“Fiji Airways’ service offers locals a great, new holiday option and will streamline visits to family and friends while also supporting tourism operators, strengthening trade channels, and providing new educational opportunities,” he said.

Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the government had great pride in supporting tourism growth in Tropical North Queensland.

“We know these additional flights will bring more visitors to our beautiful region so they can experience all the great offerings we have, from mountain bike riding to snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef,” Mr Powell said.

The direct Nadi-Cairns service will inject 53,000 seats into the market each year.

To mark the inaugural service, Fiji Airways is offering heavily discounted return fares for a limited time.

The special deals include prices from $539 return to Fiji, $999 return to LA, and just $1099 to Dallas-Fort Worth and Vancouver (via Fiji).

Offers are available until Monday, April 14.
