Police will allege a Toyota Prado was stolen from Palm Cove in Far North Queensland on Sunday afternoon.

It’s understood a 17-year-old and 14-year-old was stationary inside a vehicle stopped at a set of traffic lights on the Captain Cook Highway when it was allegedly rammed by a stolen vehicle and fled the scene.

“They were joking around at the time when they got hit. When they arrived home they were in shock and had a bit of whiplash,” the mother of two said.

A 17-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy were arrested a short distance from where the vehicle had been abandoned on Whereat Road near Edmonton.

It is understood the owner of the vehicle had parked their Land Cruiser in Palm Cove earlier in the day while they went swimming.

The sisters and their mother cannot be named for legal reasons.

But the mum praised witnesses to the crash who she said “really made a difference”.

“It just makes such a difference, you get to see the good side of the community as well as the bad side,” she said.

“We’ve talked about what to do if you get into an accident.

“But when they went to pull over to exchange details with the drivers, the lights changed and the drivers drove off while waving at them.”

Cairns resident, Seisha Bartlett, was travelling back to Cairns when she witnessed the crash.

“We were stopped at the lights and I heard a big bang,” she said.

Ms Bartlett said she had previously experienced a hit and run and she didn’t want this to happen to someone else.

After taking photos of the vehicle, Ms Bartlett shared these on social media pages.

“I was hoping the photos would find them and I’m really glad it did,” she said.

Two boys have been charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 17-year-old boy will also be alleged to have been involved in the attempted break-in of a Fretwell Road White Rock home on the same evening.

He has been charged with one count of attempted enter dwelling in relation to this incident.

The 17-year-old is due to appear before Cairns Children's Court on October 2 with the 14-year-old being dealt with under provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
