A Tablelands festival has inspired a Mareeba woman’s outfit which has been selected in Melbourne Cup fashion festivities this year.
Gracyn Marsterson is in the top three for the Victoria Racing Club 2022 Myer Fashions on the Field best suited category. She is also a Queensland finalist in the best dressed category.
Her outfit was inspired by the Mareeba Multicultural Festival.
“Every year, I would always watch the beautiful Spanish dancers who were strong and powerful and I loved their outfit so that’s where it came from,” she said.
“I had these two pair of pants that I ordered for my partner a few years ago by accident, instead of wasting material we created a jacket out of the top.”
The outfit was designed by Sonlia Fashion owner Liana Hastie.
This year there were no women and men’s racewear competitions but rather two categories Best Dressed and Best Suited where everyone could compete in.
“Dresses are very uncomfortable,” she said.
“I have actually watched over the years fashion changing, women wearing pant suits and never placing. I thought what an opportunity to be bold and wear a suit.”
Ms Marsterson will be flown south to experience the entire Melbourne Cup Carnival and will compete in the competition on Thursday, November 3.
