Munt the maltese cross shih-tzu Uber dog has been reunited with her dad after being stolen when thieves made off with her owner’s car on Tuesday.

A popular Cairns Uber mascot named Munt was inadvertently stolen when opportunistic thieves ripped off a Hyundai i30 from a Sheridan St medical centre.

Munt has gained quite a following in rideshare circles as an adorable pup with a love of driving around Cairns with her owner Sean Dunwoodie.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the Hyundai i30 was reportedly parked and running at the time it was taken, with a dog inside the vehicle.

Munt and Mr Dunwoodie together have racked up an amazing 33,000 Uber trips together.

To say the pair shared a special bond would be an understatement.

“I was shocked and dismayed when I realised she was stolen and I had a terribly emotional day,” Mr Dunwoodie said.

“I was not worried about the vehicle being gone, it was about the prized possession within it.

“Munt has done 33,000 trips as an Uber driver, she just loves it and the love she shares with everyone is infectious.

“And I get to be with this beautiful being and what she gives to others is unbelievable to witness.”

A determined Mr Dunwoodie hit the streets on Tuesday to spread the word about the reward offered for the safe return of his best mate.

“I went door knocking around some of the more notorious areas and said to people if she was returned there would be a $200 reward,” he said.

And at 7.30am on Tuesday Mr Dunwoodie received an anonymous text and later met a person who handed him the eight-year-old pup in exchange for the bounty.

“She’s perfect, my suspicion is she drove with car thieves all day, and it seems she has been looked after and she has returned in a perfect state of health,” he said.

“Whatever they have done with Munt they have treated her well and I am very thankful.”

It’s not the first time dogs have been stolen in Cairns and just this week golden retriever pups Maple, Murphy, Shep and Zen, stolen from an Edmonton home in November 2023, celebrated their first birthday.

The latest car theft this morning brings the total number of cars knocked off between Palm Cove and Gordonvale this month to 91.

So far this year a total of 646 have been stolen.
