The next era of local government is taking shape across Far North Queensland with final results in all of the region’s councils declared.

The local government elections have seen new mayors take the reins in many remote teams including Cook Shire, Yarrabah, Wujal Wujal, Hope Vale and Doomadgee.

Cairns Regional Council also has a new mayor in Amy Eden, which marks another example of a female councillor rising to beat male mayoral incumbents after Teresa Millwood’s ascension to Cassowary Coast Regional Council mayor.

Female leaders have also taken the helm in the Cook Shire, Douglas Shire, Aurukun and Torres Shire councils.

But it’s not all one way traffic.

Former Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council mayor Janita Motton has lost her position to Roy Chevathen, formerly the deputy mayor.

And Indigenous ranger Alister Gibson had a landslide victory over the incumbent mayor Bradley Creek in the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire election, just months after the community was devastated by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

While new blood in top jobs is a theme across the Far North and indeed across the state, some form of stability is likely with many councillors re-elected to their positions.
