Traffic has stalled on a major Cairns road and a woman has been rushed to hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday morning.

At 11.40am Tuesday, emergency services responded to a multi‑vehicle crash at the intersection of Brinsmead Road and Cairns Western Arterial Road, where one car hit another, sending it down an embankment.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed one person was trapped in a car.

“One person (was) trapped, that’s the person in the vehicle in the embankment,” the spokeswoman said.

She confirmed crews used spreaders and a hoist to extricate the driver before handing them to Queensland Ambulance crews.

“Our guys have used the spreaders to extricate that driver,” she said.

“To give that person over to QAS it looks like they had to put that person in a plaster stretcher and set them on hoist to bring them up to the top of the embankment.”

A QAS spokeswoman confirmed crews had transported a woman in her 60s in a stable condition to Cairns hospital.

A Queensland police services spokesman confirmed crews were on scene to direct traffic, with one lane blocked to southbound traffic towards Loridan Drive.

Motorists were warned to expect delays, and drive with caution.
