A crocodile has been spotted swimming in a pond between two resorts in Palm Cove, north of Cairns.

The Sebel Palm Cove resort manager Angie Reuter said the “2ish” metre crocodile had been sighted in one of two ponds between their resort and the old Hotel Grand Chancellor, a former golf course.

“We spotted it on Friday – my maintenance manager and I – and we reported it only because when I rode home that night, I saw people exercising their dogs off lead in the grass area,” Ms Reuter said.

“Guests often walk through that area before reaching the main stretch of shops.”

In a video filmed by Ms Reuter, the crocodile can be seen in the waters behind a bed of waterlilies.

The incident was reported on August 11 and on Monday, Parks and Wildlife installed crocodile sighting signs.

“The officer suggested relocating the young croc because of the zoning,” Ms Reuter said.

A Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesman confirmed the incident and said a 1.5 – 2.5m crocodile, believed to be a small saltwater croc, would be removed.

This is not the first time crocs have been spotted in Palm Cove.

In 2018, a 1.5m crocodile was targeted for removal from a Sanctuary Palm Cove Resort after multiple sightings in the lagoon on the northern end of the beachside suburb.

Later that year, a photo surfaced of a large crocodile emerging from a creek in Palm Cove to photo-bomb a wedding photo shoot.

The intensely debated picture was shown to several photography experts who called it genuine but the groom and bride eventually set the record straight, saying the photograph was a fake.
