FROM family reunions to longed-for holidays, the increase in the number of Cairns to Singapore flights from three to five a week is reconnecting the Far North to the world.

Taking advantage of connecting services to major European countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland, rising demand for flights into and out of Cairns is proving a boon for locals and tourists alike.

Whitfield resident Laeticia Buscaglia said she hasn’t seen her family in Switzerland in over three years but with the increase in flights this week, it was time.

“I wanted to wait for a bit, Switzerland just lifted their requirements so it’s been easy to travel now,” she said.

“I wanted to have a flight that was the quickest and not the most expensive. One stop in between was perfect for me.

“Five or ten years ago I had three or four stops in the middle and that was exhausting. That was too long.”

Ms Buscaglia said the return to travel had gotten her nervous.

“I was absolutely freaked out. I haven’t travelled for three years, with Covid there’s so many things to think about,” she said.

“But I wanted to see my brother who’s moved into his own apartment now and catch up on everything I miss.”

Singapore Airlines increased five flights per week with the SQ204 operating on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Michael Dennis moved from Innisfail to Germany three years ago and was excited to finally be able to see family after almost three years.

“It was great to come back especially after so long and also good got Steph (his girlfriend) to meet the family,” he said.

“When I originally flew over I had to stop in Brisbane and then I had to fly to London, then Frankfurt.

“The time’s shaved off completely.”

But it’s not all one-way traffic. Singapore tourists have also enjoyed the increase in services.

Kelly Kong from Singapore said holiday season was coming and she knew a lot of her friends would take advantage.

“It was great because we purposely chose something that was direct, the whole flight took six hours price,” she said.

“For the price it was very reasonable compared to going to Thailand or Phuket.

“We only booked like two weeks in advance. I am telling my friend to come here, there’s a lot to do.

Josh Clifton originally from Cairns has lived in London for three years and was surprised to see Cairns bounce back.

“It’s nice to see so many restaurants and hotels on the waterfront everything in the UK has gone the other way,” he said.

“We would like it if they did the direct flight to London though.”
