A 45-bed sub-acute satellite unit for patients needing support and rehab has now opened, offering comprehensive care from a state-of-the-art facility.
The partnership, between Infinite Care and the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), has expanded the hospital’s Older Persons Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation unit.
It will mean patients requiring inpatient treatment will be cared for at a purpose-built facility at the Edge Hill Orchards Lodge on Oregon St, Manoora.
OPSAR unit clinical director Dr Edward Strivens said the facility would help older people requiring rehabilitation.
“It is an enabling environment for both rehabilitation and the care of people living with dementia,” he said.
“It has an interprofessional team of nurses, allied health professionals and specialist doctors on site 24/7.
“The ward is fully integrated with our sub-acute services across the care continuum – at home and in residential aged care facilities, in the emergency department and the acute hospital, as well as support following discharge such as our transition care program and community health services.”
Infinite Care said the first patient was admitted last month.
Its 120-bed residential aged care facility will continue to run independently from the satellite hospital.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said move would help tackle the growing demand for health services throughout the region.
“This new facility is nestled in a convenient and tranquil location, only 4.5km from Cairns Hospital,” she said.
“It is in a great location for patients and staff, in a beautiful environment away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital, but still close enough if patients require any emergency care.”
Infinite Care’s founders and joint managing directors, Chris Stride and Tony Partridge, said they were excited to work with CHHHS by providing additional facilities at Infinite Care Edge Hill.
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the project would also boost local businesses and jobs.
