30-year-old woman arrested for stealing wallet from wheelchair user in Cairns

A lengthy investigation has lead officers to the arrest of a woman who was allegedly involved in stealing a wallet from a man in a wheelchair, among a number of thefts and assaults at a Cairns shopping centre.

A woman who allegedly stole a wallet from a man in a wheelchair at a Cairns shopping centre before fleeing the scene has been arrested after a month long investigation.

The incident took place on December 5, 2024 at Raintrees Shopping Centre.

Police alleged the 30-year-old woman stole a wallet from a 65-year-old man who was in a wheelchair, while waiting at a taxi rank.

Officers from Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch said the investigation had been a “lengthy” one.

“Officers have arrested a 30-year-old woman after a lengthy investigation into an alleged December 5 incident,” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.

It will be further alleged the woman was involved in a separate incident, which involved assault, at the same shopping centre on November 18, 2024.

“It’s alleged a staff member was assaulted when attempting to stop the woman from stealing items,” QPS spokesman said.

The woman has been charged with one count each of stealing from the person, stealing, and assault occasioning bodily harm.

She is due to appear before Cairns Magistrates Court on January 13.
