Brighton Grammar wants students to stray from mullets and instead fashion Zac Efron’s hairstyle

A summer “mullet craze” has led to elite boys’ school Brighton Grammar to ban the hairstyle, instead encouraging students to take inspiration from a Hollywood hunk.

Brighton Grammar has turned to Hollywood hunk Zac Efron to inspire students towards a clean-cut look for their return to school.

The private campus has updated its student “appearance guidelines”, resplendent with images of a crisp Efron and a boy with a mullet to show what was an “acceptable haircut” and an “unacceptable haircut”.

It comes after a “mullet craze” ran rampant through Brighton over the summer holidays, following a trend that swept across athletes in the AFL locker room.

The unkempt look seemed not to be in keeping with the academics of Brighton Grammar, which recently celebrated high VCE scores and a dux who secured a perfect 99.95 ATAR.

Updated rules for boys in years 7 to 12 urged them that their hair should not fall below the bottom of their collar, over their eyes, and should be without “significant contrasts in lengths”.

There should also be “no haircuts below blade 3”, the rules state.

Any boy who did not adhere to the rules was warned they could be sent home until their follicles got a fix.

A Brighton Grammar spokeswoman said the guidelines had “been in place for a number of years”.

“As a school, we pride ourselves on maintaining high expectations in relation to the boys’ presentation with both their uniform and haircuts,” she said.

“It is our usual practice to remind boys and their families of these expectations before the start of the new school year.”
