THERE are a certain criteria for becoming a Seafolly star. Aside from having a bronzed, athletic physique, you also need to truly love the Australian beach lifestyle. It’s latest face, Bridget Malcolm, has all the trappings of an Aussie beach babe despite her new life in the concrete jungle of New York City.

She’s sitting among half unpacked boxes in her new apartment during Insider’s interview, which she shares with her new husband Nathaniel Hoho.

“It’s all a bit of a shambles right now but we’re getting there,” she admits. The 24-year-old refers to the couple’s new home as a ‘unicorn’. “Places like this just don’t exist so I’m stoked I found it; it’s rent stabilised, it’s huge. It’s old but really cheap for the size it is and it’s got a really god vibe.”

The cramped city is a world away from the expansive Western Australian beaches she grew up visiting, which she returned to for Seafolly’s Summer 2016 campaign shoot, which took place in Broome.

“Broome to me is so quintessentially Australia; it’s such a spiritual place,” Malcolm says. “It was one of those one in a million jobs where I couldn’t believe it was actually happening.

“I’ve been to Broome before on family holidays but it was pretty amazing to go back there.”

The Perth-born beauty has been amassing an impressive portfolio since she was plucked out of the crowd at a local modelling contest almost ten years ago.

Her international career, however, was arguably launched the moment she appeared on the Victoria’s Secret runway last year alongside the world’s most beautiful and successful models.

Malcolm is currently in the midst of preparing for this year’s Victoria’s Secret show castings, which she began shortly after her wedding to Hoho in July. The 180cm tall beauty admits her regimen is much more gruelling than her preparation for Seafolly’s shoot.

“The Seafolly girl is quite athletic, natural and sexy; an Aussie babe basically,” she says. “I’m vegan and I eat very cleanly and work out year-round so for Seafolly I just made sure I drank a lot of water beforehand — because I flew half way around the world — and got lots of rest because the shoot days were long, with very early starts.”

“Victoria’s secret is a bit of a different story, simply because you’re in your underwear and its live TV and there are millions of people watching. It’s a different preparation. I’m deep in it right now and it’s a lot of twice-daily workouts, a lot of water, a lot of sleep and cooking all my own food so eating a lot of clean veggies and protein shakes. It’s boring!” she adds, laughing.

The passionate animal lover and writer’s career is closely mirroring that of past Seafolly face Miranda Kerr, who also shot for the swimwear company on Broome’s expansive coastline back in 2007. The Bonds model has a lot of respect for 33-year-old Kerr, who has built up an empire which includes her beauty company, Kora Organics.

“I think every Aussie model looks to her as a benchmark; she’s a trailblazer and everything she’s done with Kora, it’s cool,” she says. “She really created a name for herself; she’s really inspiring.”

Malcolm is open to expanding her career further than the runways, revealing she would be keen to work on an ethical fashion line.

“Cruelty free designing, like doing handbags or shoes, along the lines of Stella McCartney’s line; that would be up my alley definitely,” she says. “I’m a vegan and it’s really hard to find nice clothes that are cruelty free. I wear leather for that reason and I’m completely transparent on that — I don’t pretend to be otherwise but I’d love for that not to be the case so it’s something I’ve got my eye on for the future.”

Malcolm is still in the honeymoon phase of her marriage, having only tied the knot with her muso husband a few months prior in his hometown of Pennsylvania. The couple is planning to celebrate their nuptials again at Christmas, this time closer to Malcolm’s childhood home.

“I’m bringing my in laws over, my mother-in-law, my husband’s sister and his (Hoho’s) step dad, they’re all coming over to hang out and spend Christmas with us,” she says. “We’re going to have a little party on Rottnest Island to celebrate our wedding.”

The model is looking forward to a rest, having wrapped another huge year professionally and personally. She adds she’s also excited about introducing her new family to their first hot Aussie Christmas. “They’re going to be like, ‘where’s the snow?’”
