Truck crashes into The Ghan near Alice Springs, with passengers moved to buses

Passengers have been pulled off The Ghan after a truck smashed into the iconic train near Alice Springs.

A truck has crashed into The Ghan near Alice Springs.

Passengers have had a once-in-a-lifetime trip cut short after a cattle truck hit The Ghan train in the Australian outback.

The truck collided with the luxury passenger train, which was headed to Adelaide, about 10am local time on Sunday at a level crossing about 60km north of Alice Springs.

There were 222 passengers on board at the time.

A spokeswoman for Journey Beyond, the company that manages the The Ghan, said no serious injuries had been identified by passengers, train drivers or crew.

“Coach transport has been arranged to collect guests and transfer them to Alice Springs,” she said.

“Emergency services are currently attending the scene.”

The truck driver was treated for shock at the scene and has been transported to hospital.

The Ghan, which can transport up to 300 people, travels between Darwin and Adelaide over three days.

Tickets cost from $2755 per person, up to more than $5000 for a platinum ticket one way, including all meals.

The Ghan operates between Adelaide and Darwin and has been running for more than 90 years.

After arriving in Alice Springs, the spokeswoman said guests would take part in an off-board experience and it was hoped guests would reboard the train, which would then resume its journey to Adelaide.

“We are fully committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew and will undertake a full investigation, engaging with all relevant authorities, into the events leading up to this incident,” the spokeswoman said.
