Two people have died after a car smashed into a tree before being engulfed in flames.

The horror crash unfolded on Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation in Balgowlah, in Sydney’s north, shortly before 11pm on Wednesday.

According to police, the black Toyota Corolla crashed into a tree before catching fire.

A 23-year-old man and the passenger, a 26-year-old woman, died at the scene.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command established a crime scene that was later examined by specialist police.

An investigation has commenced to determine if speed was a factor.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
