Police are hoping to speak to a man who they believe could assist with their inquiries after a man was shot in the face and shoulder on the Gold Coast.

Police were called to Tallebudgera Creek Rd, Tallebudgera Valley, following reports a man had been shot about noon on Thursday.

The 59-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his shoulder and head and was taken to Gold Coast University hospital in a stable condition.

Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said police were unclear on why the 57-year-old man was on the 59-year-old’s property and under his house when the pair got into an argument.

“We understand the victim had returned home after hearing noise from his address and upon confronting the offender, he has been shot,” Inspector Mooney said.

“Luckily, he has been able to avoid the majority of that shotgun shell.

“He’s then got into a scuffle with our offender before escaping in his vehicle with the firearm used.

“The offender has fled on foot and his current whereabouts is unknown.

“(The 59-year-old man) was very lucky to avoid the majority of the gunshot round.”

As the investigation continues, police are hoping to speak to a man who is described as caucasian, aged in his 50s with untidy hair. He has a skinny face and yellow teeth.

“At the time (of the shooting) he was wearing work shorts, a flannel-type shirt, a dark-coloured slouch hat and tan work boots,” police said in a statement.

“Anyone who has seen this man, or who has any information that can assist investigations, is urged to contact police.”

Police believe the 57-year-old man has lived in the Tallebudgera Valley for about four years, most recently staying in a tent on a neighbouring property to where the shooting occurred.

Police had initially made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) at Tallebudgera Valley, following the shooting, which has since ended.

Inspector Mooney said police were appealing for any information about the man’s whereabouts.

“He could be bunkered down in someone’s shed, hiding under someone’s house, he could be sleeping under a tree or could have fled the state by now, we don’t know,” he said.

“We’ll just saturate the area and cover all bases to see if he’s still in the area.

“We do have concerns for his well being.

“Police are searching the area and still have a presence in the area and we’re still looking for that male who is outstanding.

“We believe his appearance has deteriorated at this time, so we do ask the community to keep that in mind when they’re looking for him.”

While the 57-year-old man does not have a criminal history, police are urging the community to remain vigilant after he used a homemade shotgun.

“They’re actually the same as a normal gun, have the same firing mechanism and once the shotgun shell goes off it has the same result,” Inspector Mooney said.

“Whatever they use to trigger the shotgun shell and the firing pin will have the same result and power.

“There’s some concerns that he’s still out there.

“He could well be armed. This is a homemade gun.

“He’s not a weapons licence holder, so anything he has could be homemade.”

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Chief Inspector Les Bulluss said police believed the weapon used in what they are treating as an attempted murder was “made out of piping”.

“It’s a handmade shotgun, it’s very well made and it’s something that’s quite concerning,” he said.
