Prime Minister Scott Morrison gifted former US President Donald Trump a framed picture of Trump and his wife Melania while on a trip to the White House, according to a government registry.
The US State Department overnight released its registry of gifts given to senior US officials by foreign leaders.
It is understood the picture was of the former President and First Lady after they farewelled the Morrisons on the night of the state dinner. The gift was turned over to the US National Archives.
An update to Mr Morrison’s own gift registry shows the former President gifted the Australian Prime Minister two Tiffany Globe-Trotter cases, a Paul Revere Silver Tiffany Bowl, a framed map of the Coral Sea and a calfskin leather photo album of the US Official visit in return.
Mr Morrison also gifted Vice President Mike Pence a pair of RM Williams Boots, while First Lady Melania Trump received a pair of pearl earrings from Jenny Morrison.
Mr Morrison was invited to the White House in 2019. At the time, he was just the second leader to be given a state dinner by the President following French president Emmanuel Macron.
State dinners are a rare occasion and are designed to showcase the US’s closest relationships with foreign allies.
At a welcome ceremony at the White House, Mr Morrison declared the US President wouldn’t find a “better mate” than Australia.
The pair also toured a recycling plant in Ohio owned by Australian Anthony Pratt.
It’s not the only framed photo Mr Trump has received of himself. Leaders from Egypt and Vietnam also joined Mr Morrison in the practice.
Then-Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong gifted Mr Trump a painting of himself on dual-pane glass, while Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi gave Mr Trump a “large double frame carved from black stone with [an] image of President Donald J. Trump in precious metal on one side and the coat of arms of Egypt on the reverse.”
