A neighbour has described the frantic scenes of bystanders screaming to get “tools” to free a man from a fatal car crash in Sydney’s west.
Emergency services were called to Hawksview Street in Merrylands on Saturday afternoon after receiving reports of a serious crash.
Arriving at the scene at around 5pm, police found a Hyundai i30 and a Holden Commodore utility had collided.
The Holden had rolled and hit a third parked utility, which was empty.
The passenger of the Holden, a 35-year-old man, died at the scene, while the car’s driver, a 23-year-old man, was taken to Westmead Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and underwent mandatory testing.
Local resident Carol Malouf said neighbours rushed to the passenger’s aid but were unable to penetrate the overturned car.
“We could see his arm, everybody ran to the car to try and rescue him,” she said.
“They were screaming to get some tools, my husband took some over to try and break the car to get him out, but we couldn’t.
“Neighbours surrounded the car trying to break the doors and managed to get the driver out.”
Ms Malouf said she had seen accidents on the same stretch of “dangerous” road before.
“It’s an open road with two big hills and no speed bumps,” she said.
“The accident happened right at the top of the hill where drivers sometimes don’t see what’s coming.”
A third man, the 37-year-old driver of the Hyundai, was not injured and was also taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing.
Police have since established a crime scene and are urging anyone with information of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
