Live breaking news: Berejiklian: ‘We will see more cases’
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned Covid cases will continue to increase even when vaccination targets are reached.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has given a grave warning that Covid cases will continue to grow even when vaccination targets are met.
She has flagged the loosening restrictions once 70 or 80 per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated against Covid. She told A Current Affair 70 per cent should be reached at the end of October and 80 per cent in the middle of November.
Ms Berejilian added, there would still be cases of Covid in the community when that time comes.
“We have to be confronted by the fact that we are going to see case numbers go up (once those targets are met), I don't like to use this comparison, every year, we lose between six and 800 people in New South Wales alone because of the flu,” she said.
“When we get to 70% double vaccination, we have to be confronted by the fact we will see more cases, but what we also will see a lower rate of hospitalisation because the more people that are vaccinated, especially vulnerable people, it means the chance of getting the the disease severely is greatly reduced if you are fully vaccinated.”
NSW’s leader had flagged that the only way out of the lockdown is through vaccination. Earlier, on Monday, she said NSW’s vaccination rate is among one of the highest in the world.
