About 13.6 million Australians have just days left to claim extra benefits from their private health insurance before they expire on December 31.

A national survey revealed many Australians struggled to maintain their health routines throughout the year because of work commitments and cost barriers.

But health providers have reported Australians are now rushing to book medical appointments before the year ends so they can make the most of their optional extras such as optical, dental and physiotherapy.

Bupa data revealed optical sales surged 54 per cent in December compared to other months, and dental and optical claims were more common at the end of the year as people booked eye tests, purchased new glasses, sunglasses or had their dental check-up.

Bupa Health Services clinical director Dr Tony MacDermott said busy Australians were looking to get more value out of their healthcare appointments, even if they left it until the last minute.

“Along with booking in summer holidays and end of year parties, December is a timely reminder to book in those appointments you might have missed or delayed during the year,” he said.

“It’s also a good time to review your health insurance policy to ensure it’s still relevant to your current health and wellbeing needs.”

About 55 per cent of the population accesses private health insurance in some capacity,
