An Australian politician has suffered a hilarious gaffe halfway through an on-air interview.
Deputy Oppositon Leader Sussan Ley was speaking to Sky News Australia First Edition co-host Peter Stefanovic on Wednesday morning when she was forced to flee.
While standing on a patch of lawn in Leeton, in the Riverina region of NSW, discussing the budget update from Treasurer Jim Chalmers, she was interrupted by an unwelcomed guest – a sprinkler.
“If Jim Chalmers turns up on your program, I just issue this challenge to him – can he talk about his budget without referring to the opposition?” she asked.
However, as she finished asking her question, a burst of water splashed from the corner of the screen and into Ms Ley’s face, forcing her to retreat off camera to safety.
Sky News host Peter Stefanovic tried to conceal his laughter, but couldn’t hold it in for long.
“I think there was a sprinkler,” he laughed, caught off-guard by the hilarious scenes.
“I think I caught that from the corner of my eye, a sprinkler. Nasty sprinklers in Leeton.”
After a short break, the Deputy Opposition Leader returned to the screens, this time far away from any other risky sprinklers.
“I’m here Pete,” she confirmed with a smile.
“The sprinklers on the amazing lawn in front of the war memorial in Leeton in the Riverina just turned on … and yeah I got soaked.”
Mr Stefanovic responded with a cheeky jab to the Treasurer, who Ms Ley was taking aim at before the sprinklers switched on.
“Has anyone checked on Jim Chalmers, did he turn on the tap on maybe?” he asked, both erupting in fits of laughter.
