A Google smartphone sold at major Australian retailers, such as JB Hi-Fi, has been recalled over concerns it could overheat and cause burns or spark a fire.
The ACCC has urged impacted consumers to stop using the Google Pixel 4a smartphone.
The consumer watchdog said an automatic Android 13 update was rolled out for Pixel 4a devices in Australia on 8 January 2025, which included new safety features.
“The firmware update provides new battery management features to mitigate the risk of
overheating,” the ACCC said.
An overheating battery could pose a risk of fire and/or burns to a user, it warned.
Owners are urged to check their device received the update.
Impacted consumers may be eligible for a refund.
The device was sold at Google Australia, Telstra, JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, Optus and TPG Telecom.
The affected model number is G025N, with the devices on sale between 1 August 2020 – 30 September 2022.
