A teenager is behind bars on remand after allegedly kicking and punching a police officer while he was surrounded by about 30 youths outside Optus Stadium in Perth.

The officer was conducting a motorcycle patrol outside the city’s major stadium shortly after 2pm on Saturday when he approached a 16-year-old charging his e-bike.

Police will allege that, after a short interaction between the pair, the boy punched and kicked the police officer several times causing cuts and bruises to the man’s face.

A group of about 30 juveniles were allegedly in the area at the time of incident and surrounded the officer before the 16-year-old left the area on his e-motorcycle.

The teen was taken into custody a short distance away soon afterwards and has since been charged with one count of assaulting a public officer. He will front court on January 22.

Police said they received reports prior to the incident about a large group of juveniles “creating a disturbance” and riding bikes, scooters, and e-bikes through Perth.

Inquiries into the large group and any further incidents remain ongoing, according to police, including reported disturbances in the Northbridge and Burswood areas.

WA Police Road Policing Command District Office Inspector Steve Walters is expected to front the media in relation to the alleged assault later on Sunday afternoon.
