Approximate number of international students studying at CQU in 2022

International students will soon be let back into Central Queensland University campuses across three states. Here’s how it will play out.

Central Queensland University is working towards getting up to 1500 international students back on their campuses as international borders begin to open.

This comes after two years of stringent Covid restrictions prohibiting most international arrivals.

CQUni is now fielding application and enrolment inquiries for students who wish to study in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

The university’s international director Shehan Thampapillai said there were a number of incentives available to attract students to Australia.

“While we have helped some students to continue with their studies online, others have delayed their study journey for when they could return to a physical campus,” he said.

“We were delighted to hear the announcement late last year from the federal government that international borders would re-open to eligible student via holders.

“We have seen students return to NSW and Victoria and just last week Queensland reopened their international borders to vaccinated travellers.

“The reopening of our borders to students has also been complimented by some great new initiatives to reinvigorate the international education sector here in Australia.”

Mr Thampapillai said some of the initiatives were the extension of work rights to three years for masters degrees, the relaxation of student visa work limits and a visa fee rebate for international students entering the country in the next eight weeks.

“Destination Australia Scholarships are funded by the Federal Government and are available to international students studying at CQUniversity‘s regional campuses in Bundaberg, Cairns and Rockhampton.

“These study locations offer much more than a quality education with their close-knit communities, a truly Australian experience, opportunities to explore iconic natural wonders, and a lower cost of living than capital cities.

“The scholarships are valued at $15,000 per year to eligible students and can help students to cover the cost of tuition fees, living expenses and study resources.”

There are still ongoing impacts to flight availability and processing times for visas, making it difficult for CQU to come to a certain figure as to how many students there will be.

However, Mr Thampapillai suggests there could be about 1500 international students come to study this year.
