Anthony Albanese and his bride-to-be Jodie Haydon have snuck out of the country for a 7-day tropical holiday, with the government requesting a news blackout on his location.

News.com.au has confirmed that the Prime Minister and his fiance were spotted flying economy to the tropical location over the weekend by Australian travellers.

And just like the former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s ill-fated holiday to Hawaii, he has not disclosed in an official statement that he is overseas, instead releasing a simple statement that he is “on leave”.

Ahead of another hectic round of overseas travel including his first face-to-face formal talks with the US President Donald Trump, Mr Albanese is expected to be out of the country until next weekend.

The Prime Minister’s office has requested – and news.com.au has agreed – not to disclose Mr Albanese’s location until he returns from overseas.

While the trip is privately funded it is likely to cost taxpayers thousands of dollars because Mr Albanese and his partner must travel with AFP security team for his protection.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed that Mr Albanese and Ms Haydon, who are planning to wed over the summer, are not getting hitched overseas during their 7-day tropical getaway.

Tourists on the flight who spotted the Prime Minister expressed surprise that Mr Albanese and his partner were flying economy on the flight, joking that “perhaps the nice thing to do would be to send them some decent bubbly”.

Mr Albanese has travelled overseas extensively for work since he was first elected in 2022 but has rarely taken personal holidays.

In fact, this trip is believed to be the first time he has travelled overseas for a holiday since he was first elected as Prime Minister in 2022.

It follows a furore during the 2019-2020 bushfires when Scott Morrison was busted in Hawaii after his office repeatedly refused to disclose if he was overseas or indeed where he was.

In this instance, the Prime Minister’s office did put out a statement confirming he is on leave – a step skipped by Scott Morrison – but has not disclosed he is overseas.

“The Prime Minister will be on leave for seven days from Saturday 11 October 2025,” the statement released on Saturday states.

“During this time, the Deputy Prime Minister will be Acting Prime Minister.”

News.com.au understands that the Prime Minister’s office briefed outlets about the planned holiday in recent days and requested a news blackout on his location, which was not disclosed for security reasons, amid increasing threats at home and overseas.

The Prime Minister’s office did not disclose that Mr Albanese is overseas to media outlets, as was the case in 2020 when Mr Morrison’s office briefed media outlets and asked for secrecy over the holiday for family reasons.

Mr Morrison’s office also did not disclose he was overseas, or in Hawaii, until he was spotted by eyewitnesses boarding a plane and in Hawaii during the bushfires.

It later emerged that Mr Morrison had briefed Mr Albanese on the family holiday but not the fact that he was overseas.

Mr Morrison was then forced to backtrack after telling Parliament that Labor leader Anthony Albanese was “fully aware” he was headed to Hawaii during the catastrophic bushfires in late 2019.

He later cut short the family holiday to Hawaii after significant criticism over being absent during the bushfire crisis.

Mr Morrison initially claimed he told Mr Albanese he was going to Hawaii, but within hours he twice attempted to correct the record, finally admitting he had not disclosed his holiday destination.

The issue erupted when Labor MP Fiona Phillips questioned the Prime Minister about the holiday.

“When my electorate was burning, the Prime Minister’s office told journalists he was not on holiday in Hawaii, why did the Prime Minister’s office say that when it wasn’t true?” she said.

Mr Morrison responded by saying he had texted Mr Albanese while en route to Hawaii, informing him about where he was going.

“I texted him from the plane when I was going on that leave and told him where I was going and he was fully aware of where I was travelling with my family,” Mr Morrison said.

“On the 15th of December, 2019, at 9:44pm, the Prime Minister did text me saying he was going on leave. He did not tell me where he was going. He said he was going with his family. I kept that text message confidential, as you do with private text messages between private phones,” Mr Albanese said.

“On Friday, he disclosed in an interview with 2GB that he had texted me and that was the first time that that became public.

“But at no stage did he tell me where he was going.”

Mr Morrison later insisted that Mr Albanese had politicised his holiday.

“He knew I was taking leave, Mr Speaker, I told him I was taking leave, and Mr Speaker, he chose to politicise that and has done so ever since,” Mr Morrison said.

He was then forced to return to the dispatch box to offer a further explanation.

“When I was referring to ‘he knew where I was going and was fully aware I was travelling with my family’, what I meant was that we were going on leave together,” he said.

“I know I did not tell him where we were going because that is a private matter where members take leave and I know I did not tell him the destination, nor would I, nor would he expect me to have told him.

“I simply told him that I was taking leave with my family, and he was aware of that at that time.”

Mr Albanese later told Sky News Mr Morrison’s accusation was extraordinary.

“The problem for this Prime Minister is he has a character trait whereby he says whatever is convenient at the time regardless of what the facts are,” Mr Albanese said.
