ALICE Springs Councillor Marli Banks has accused the Gunner Government of engaging in propaganda as she tendered her resignation from the town council last night.

Ms Banks will be running for the Australian Federation Party in the seat of Braitling against Labor incumbent Dale Wakefield and independent Scott McConnell.

While announcing her resignation at the council meeting last night, Ms Banks said many other councillors are running in the election because they are frustrated with the Gunner Government.

“Misinformation continues to be propagandised by the current government,” she said,

“It’s not surprising that so many elected members have chosen to contest the upcoming Legislative Assembly election in August.

“This is a pushback by elected members on this government due to … dealings surrounding the National Aboriginal Art Gallery and misinformation that continues to be propogandasied by the current government.”

Another Alice Springs councillor Catherine Satour will also be standing for Australian Federation Party in Namatjira.

Ms Satour also announced her resignation last night and said it was an honour to be part of the council.

Other members of the Alice Springs Town Council running for election include mayor Damien Ryan for the CLP and deputy mayor Matt Paterson for Territory Alliance.

Ms Banks said the “good work” of council was being met with contempt by the Government which will compulsorily acquire ANZAC Oval from Council to build the National Aboriginal Art galley

“I wish to challenge these views and the concerns the community continues to raise with me head on and without fear of retribution,” she said.

“This is why I’m stepping away from Council and focusing on contesting the seat of Braitling at the upcoming NT election.”
