Works on a critical piece of sporting infrastructure have been completed in the Red Centre, giving the local tennis club an edge compared to the rest of the Northern Territory – and opening right in time for one of the biggest sporting events in town.
The Alice Springs Tennis Centre now has new synthetic grass courts and fences – the only tennis facility in the Territory with them – which are ready to use ahead of the 2024 Masters Games from October 12.
The project cost $780,230 and was completed by MPH projects.
The courts were reopened on Wednesday, with Alice Springs Town Council Mayor Matt Paterson hoping the new courts would encourage “more people to come out and give tennis a go”.
“The synthetic grass was chosen in consultation with Tennis Australia and Alice Springs Tennis as they will last longer and retain less heat than hard courts,” he said.
“The new courts look incredible and offer tennis players a new surface to try out
“We’ve also kept two hard courts to ensure young players can train ahead of national tournaments.”
Despite the Masters Games being only days away from beginning, the new courts have Alice Springs Tennis Association president Joel Crawford looking even further afield.
“The synthetic grass courts have already got the interest of Tennis Seniors NT in holding a NT Seniors Championship of the NT’s best senior players,” he said.
“We are now the only tennis club in the NT with synthetic grass courts which are very soft under foot unlike the hard courts everywhere else.”
