A few hard years on the farm have been made easier after cattle fetched “southern prices” – according to one agent – at an annual Red Centre cattle sale.

Hundreds of cattlemen and women braved the cold on Thursday July 4 to head down to the annual Alice Springs Bohning Yards Cattle Sale, which saw more than 4000 cattle sold.

Top-tier Angus cattle went for $3.65 a kilo, according to Elders Alice Springs stock agent Herbie Neville, in what he called a “strong sale”.

“It was an excellent yarding, the best quality yarding I think I’ve seen in Alice Springs – I’ve been here 30 years,” he said.

“The sale was strong, but it eased off on the lighter cattle.

“Your heavy cattle were really at southern prices here in Alice Springs.”

Buyers came from all over Australia, with some travelling from Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.

Sellers, on the other hand, were mostly based in Central Australia.

Sheri and Ted Fogarty from Palmer Valley Station only had to travel 150km north to sell their 698 cattle.

They got a top price of $3.62 a kilo, which they said netted them “about $1700” per cow.

“After the drought it was really good and then it sort of petered out a bit now … it’s continuing to get better,” Mr Fogarty said.

Mrs Fogarty said this year had an amazing selection of cattle and it “was a credit to the vendors”.

The sale also drew a few observers from South Australia, with Scott Finlay from Granite Ridge Angus coming up to watch the sale.

“It was a great yarding of cattle,” Mr Finlay said.

“We’re all Angus down our way; it’s just good to see some different lines.”
