Emergency services on the scene for a fiery fatal crash on the Bruce Highway

The car had blitzed past police to avoid an RBT when it slammed into trees on Gill Street in Charters Towers, leaving an 18 year old woman with critical head injuries.

Police officers were standing next to a parked police vehicle on Gill Street at around 2.30am when they signalled for a Toyota LandCruiser to stop for a roadside breath test.

The 17-year-old male driver of the LandCruiser allegedly evaded police and continued to travel out of police sight before being discovered a short time later crashed into matured palm trees.

The impact of the crash was so severe the windscreen was popped from its casing and smashed, with only tree stumps left of the palms.

The eighteen year old female passenger was transported by helicopter to Townsville University in a critical condition with head injuries where she remains critical but stable.

Forensic Crash Unit is investigating, overseen by the Ethical Standards Command.

Townsville Police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said “all” possible causes would be investigated.

“Every aspect is looked at and even though it might be apparent what’s happened we will always look at every factor,” he said.

“They’ll be looking at the actions of the driver, damage to the vehicle, whether speed was a factor, influence of drugs and or alcohol.

“My latest update is that she’s (18-year old woman) still fighting for life and that’s very sad indeed, split second decisions can be life altering.”

Sen Sgt Warrick said he couldn’t confirm if the driver and, or passenger were wearing a seatbelt. The driver from Julia Creek was alcohol tested on scene before taken back to the station for further testing and questioning.

Snr Sgt Warrick said no charges had been laid.

It comes as three cars were involved in a crash minutes earlier on the Bruce Highway near Ayr.

It’s understood a car stopped at road works traffic lights and was rear ended by two cars following shortly after 2am Sunday morning.

Paramedics transported two male patients with head injuries to Ayr Hospital.

A Townsville University Hosiptal spokeswoman said both patients were being transferred to Townsville for furthe treatment.
