Families in Sydney’s northwest will soon be able to send their kids to two shiny new schools as the NSW government pumps millions into education infrastructure alongside the new Parramatta Light Rail.
The $125 million Melrose Park school redevelopment will boost the existing primary school’s capacity to 700 kids by day one, term one in 2027, and see a brand-new high school built next door to accommodate 700 more.
The new schools are a short walk from the Waratah Street stop of the new Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 extension, where massive new housing developments are expected to increase the local population by 32.73 per cent in 2026.
Land was obtained by the Department of Education for the new “education precinct” back in 2019, announced by former Liberal MP for Ryde Victor Dominello.
However this will be the community’s first glimpse at the blueprints, which include more classrooms, a new library and school hall, and a public preschool for the youngest families.
Melrose Park Public School is currently overflowing its permanent buildings, and has three demountable classrooms.
Currently the nearest high schools are Marsden High School, four kilometres away, Riverside Girls High School in Hunters Hill and Cumberland High School.
Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car said the major upgrades reflect her government’s commitment to provide the fastest-growing communities “essential” facilities.
“This community has grown significantly in recent years, it is important that young Melrose Park families know there are high-quality local public schools their children can attend,” she said.
When construction begins in 2025, current students at the primary school will be housed in temporary facilities on the site.
