Why Dominic Perrottet is looking at copying Daniel Andrews

Young NSW drivers could soon be given thousands of dollars to trade up their cars as Dominic Perrottet eyes off a Daniel Andrews policy.

Foundations in regions need to be 'strong': Perrottet

Dominic Perrottet has confirmed he is considering handing out cash to young people to trade up their old “clunkers”.

The NSW Premier told The Daily Telegraph Bush Summit that he is mulling over whether to copy Daniel Andrews’ scheme.

“Yep,” he responded emphatically when asked.

“I think it’s a great idea. They’re doing a trial and that goes to road safety and it also goes to young people.”

Under the Unsafe2safe program being trialled in Victoria, young drivers are able to receive up to $5000 to upgrade from an older, unsafe car to a newer model.

The trial aims to replace up to 1000 unsafe vehicles that are more than 16 years old and have poor safety ratings.

Young drivers in regional Victoria driving older cars are 15 times more likely to be killed in crashes compared with the state average.

In NSW, young people aged 17-25 represent about 20 per cent of drivers killed annually on NSW roads but only make up about 15 per cent of licence holders.

Ahead of next year’s state election, Mr Perrottet sharpened his pitch to young voters.

“I find from my perspective, as a member of the government and being treasurer, a lot of the programs we run in regional NSW, I find, are aimed more at seniors,” he said.

“I still think there’s not enough work that we do for young people in regional NSW.

“There are not enough support programs and I think what the Victorian government has announced is something that is positive.

“It goes to road safety. It provides a leg up for young people and it is something that we’re looking at.”

The Premier said his government “have a plan for a future” and was committed to delivering modern services that were “available, accessible and reliable”, including eliminating black spots and pioneering telecommunication towers to circumvent coverage issues.
