Residents have described the harrowing moments before a three-year-old boy died during a horrific traffic incident in Perth.

The young boy fell from the back seat of a Kia Carnival station wagon as the vehicle was driving north on Arthur St, Dayton, about 3.50pm on Wednesday.

The child was run over by the Kia and died a short time later from his critical injuries.

Speaking to the West Australian, resident Sinikiwe Dumba said the woman, believed to be the child’s mother let out a “scream of agony” as ambulance and police arrived at the home.

“I heard lots of sirens, I just assumed it was the normal ambulance or police car going by, but there were more than one that kept passing,” she said.

“At the corner opposite the park, there were many civilians and police there and I heard a woman scream out of agony and I knew something was wrong.”

Western Australian Premier Roger Cook said the incident was “harrowing and desperately sad”.

“It’s a horrible, horrible accident, and it just goes to the heart of just how important it is to look after our little ones wherever a vehicle or any traffic are involved,” he said.

“Life can be so fleeting, it can be taken away from us in just a matter of moments, none of us can really understand what that family is going through today.”

In the state, drivers are legally responsible for ensuring children a suitable restrained when travelling in a car.

Laws advise that children between six months and up to four years of age should be held in either a rear or forward-facing child restraint with in-built harness.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam or video of the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
