WARNING: Graphic
Security camera footage has captured the moment a teenager snatched a mobile phone from an elderly man before being fatally struck by a bus just seconds later.
The incident occurred on Friday in Lapa, a suburb of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Footage shared on social media showed the 17-year-old, wearing a baseball cap, dark T-shirt, shorts and thongs, walking near a pedestrian crossing as he passes the 71-year-old victim, who is speaking on the phone.
The youth turns and lunges, grabbing the phone out of the man’s hand and dashing away.
A second CCTV angle shows him running across a road, directly into the path of an oncoming bus, which knocks him to the ground and appears to drag him for several metres before stopping.
The Public Security Secretariat said in a statement to Brazilian news outlet Correio that police were called to respond to a hit-and-run incident on Domingos Rodrigues Street on July 19.
“At the time, the police found that the young man had taken an elderly man’s cell phone and was run over by a bus while fleeing, which was unable to stop in time,” the statement said.
“He was taken to the Brasilandia Hospital, but did not survive.”
Police investigating the case have requested tests and analysis from the Legal Medical Institute.
The footage has gone viral on social media, with some Brazilian users branding it “instant karma”.
One Reddit user said, “Hit and run? More like ran and got hit.”
But many described the situation as sad.
“Seventeen and dead for a phone,” one person wrote.
“A f**king phone. He probably wanted to trade that s**t in for a measly 100 bucks tops. That’s what life is worth these days.”
