Mark McLachlan was left dumbfounded over a confusing parking sign in Sydney that seemed to simultaneously allow and ban parking at the same spot.

Driver left stumped by confusing parking sign in Sydney

A bizarre parking sign has featured in a viral TikTok video after attracting the attention of a Sydney driver.

Mark McLachlan spotted something a bit off about the sign last week and uploaded a subsequent clip highlighting his confusion on Friday.

The sign, erected alongside a strip of street parking bays, featured a “no parking” symbol and a seemingly contradictory direction.

Beneath the symbol were the words, “motor vehicles excepted”.

Mr McLachlan filmed himself in the midst of a moment of deep perplexity, appearing unable to fathom what the sign actually meant.

In a premium display of comedic timing, he flashed between showing the sign and himself gazing at it notably dumbfounded, several times.

His bemusement was far from lost on TikTok users, with hundreds of more than 122,000 viewers joining in on the fun on comments.

The “no parking” sign left people scratching theirs heads because it seemed pointless in the context of a motor vehicle parking zone.

“So you can park there as long as you don’t park there,” one person jokingly suggested in a comment.

“No parking? But yes parking?” another wrote.

As some pointed out, the sign was actually making sure drivers didn’t park trailers, boats, horse floats or caravans in the parking bays.

“I think they’re trying to tell you not to park motorhomes and trailers, but truly I cannot be 100 per cent sure,” one wrote.

Someone else joked that the sign was telling drivers they could leave two or more motor vehicles, so long as they didn’t just leave one.

Another person sarcastically commented that the sign meant there was “no parking your horses there obviously”.

Many others simply appreciated Mr McLachlan’s take on the situation.

“You captured the essence perfectly in this video, I felt every part of the confusion,” one wrote.

The City of Sydney has been contacted for clarification on the sign.
