An elderly pedestrian has died after he was hit by a hatchback on a busy suburban street.

A man has died after being hit by a car on a busy suburban street in Sydney’s southwest overnight.

Emergency services were called to Gibson Ave in Padstow shortly after 6pm on Friday following reports a pedestrian had been hit.

A 71-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition. He later died in hospital.

Police believe the man had been struck by a Hyundai hatchback.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, was taken to also hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have established a crime scene and will prepare a report for the coroner.
