A woman had an unlucky start to the new year when she received a fine after parking in Byron Bay.

In a Facebook post, the woman shared her baffling experience of getting fined $120 for simply reverse parking at the picturesque Wategos Beach.

“Can someone please explain to me why it’s now illegal to reverse into a park? Here we are paying to park and getting fined for it $120. Just awesome!

“Has anyone else had this happen? Can the SMALL print perhaps be put at the TOP!?” she wrote in the post, which included a picture of a parking sign explaining how she had broken the rules.

The sign reads: "Front in at all times.”

Numerous Byron residents chimed into the debate in the comments section, with many sharing the woman’s frustration.

One user angrily wrote: “Most stupid moronic rule that only Australia has to line the pockets of the council. Bloody wankers. And that whole thing about it being to not obstruct the footpath is bulls***!!

“If you actually observe real foot traffic most cars should be forced to reverse park in places where they have the sign. The opposite to the rule!!”

Another person explained to the woman the reason for the rule: “They changed it years ago because of exhaust fumes onto the pavement and into shops.”

Meanwhile, another agreed with the sentiment that the no reverse parking rule was the local council’s attempt at a cash grab and said “They should change the name of the town Byron Pay.”

Others in the comments section had felt less empathetic towards the woman and said the rule had been there for a while now and that it was her fault for not observing the sign.

One user wrote: “Jesus people its been the same forever.”

Another wrote: “Read the sign, pay the fine, suck it up.”
