Ben Fordham, Dominic Perrottet speak out against City of Sydney’s speed limit plan

A dramatic plan to make inner-city Sydney roads 40km/h has been slammed as “nuts” and “ridiculous”.

A ‘big difference’ between an election campaign and being in the ‘heat of the battle’

Radio star Ben Fordham has hit back at a dramatic move to drop inner Sydney’s speed limit to 40km/h, labelling the proposal “nuts”.

The 2GB host’s comments came after City of Sydney councillors voted unanimously in favour of the change, saying the reduction would slash road fatalities and injuries.

“We know that we have to take care, no one wants to have an accident, no one wants to hurt anyone,” Fordham said.

“But making all of us drive 40km/h across all of the CBD and surrounding areas, anywhere controlled by Clover Moore and the City of Sydney, I think it’s nuts.”

Seventy per cent of the area’s roads have a 40km/h speed limit.

Premier Dominic Perrottet agreed with the sentiment, saying having a blanket limit across such busy areas was “ridiculous”.

“We’ve got to speed up our city, not slow it down, and obviously this comes back to the NSW government, but my view is you’ve got to have a balanced and reasonable approach,” he said.

“Obviously, you want to ensure safety in our city, but we are a global city, we can’t slow it down. To have a blanket rule like that seems pretty ridiculous to me.”

The council’s measure will now be put before the state government.
