This American icon has turned its back on tradition to deliver a greener solution. Will it pay off?

Black Rock: A driver's dream

Ram has said goodbye to its V8 engine to make way for luxurious features.

While the entry price for the new Ram 1500 remains the same for 2025, the American pick-up giant has replaced its Hemi V8 engine with a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine – along with luxury features such as air suspension, a passenger display and massaging seats.

Jeff Barber, general manager of Ram Trucks Australia, said “we know a lot of people love the sound of the Hemi V8, but we think the Hurricane engines will become iconic in their own right”.

“Once people experience the power of the Hurricane engine series they will see what the fuss is all about,” he said.

“With more power and more torque than the 5.7-litre Hemi V8, the Hurricane engines take the Ram 1500 – and, frankly, US pick-ups – to a new level of performance.”

Pricing for the 2025 range starts from $141,950 before on-road costs for the Laramie Sport and $159,950 for the luxurious Limited.

This stacks up to be more expensive than the Ford F-150 range ($106,950-$140,945 before on-road costs), and Chevrolet Silverado but more affordable than the Silverado HD ($130,500-$166,500 before on-road costs) and Toyota Tundra ($155,990 before on roads).

The new Hurricane six-cylinder engine in the Laramie Sport produces 313kW of power and 635Nm of torque, while the Limited gets a performance tune which stretches this to 403kW and 707Nm. Both are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Claimed 0-100km/h sprint times are 6.0 seconds and 5.3 seconds respectively.

It’s worth noting, the standard output Laramie Sport has 7.2 per cent more power and offers 14.2 per cent more torque over the V8.

The high output Limited goes further with a 38.5 per cent lift in power and 27.2 per cent increase in torque.

Ram also added a larger fuel tank for the Limited, which has a 125-litre tank requiring premium unleaded.

The American brand expects significant fuel savings in comparison to the thirsty V8.

Towing capacity has been reduced to 4.2 tonnes in the Limited, while the lighter Laramie Sport pulls 4.5 tonnes, and can carry an 863kg payload.

For context, rivals like the Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra and Chevrolet Silverado can tow 4.5 tonnes.

Both Ram models benefit from a design refresh with a new front as well as LED headlights and tail lights. The Laramie Sport has 20-inch alloy wheels while the Limited gains 22-inch alloys. Both receive a power tailgate and five new driving modes for 2025.

Inside, the Stellantis-owned brand has added a 10.25-inch front passenger display which can mirror a smartphone using a HDMI cable, send navigation routes and control the music from the centre 14.4-inch vertical infotainment screen.

It also has dual wireless phone chargers.

Limited customers also receive air suspension, massage seats, 360 degree view camera, and more to justify the near-$20,000 price premium.

Orders are open for the V6 Ram 1500 ahead of deliveries starting in April 2025, however those who still want a V8 can find limited stock available in Ram showrooms.
