Lexus has locked in plans to introduce the new GX four-wheel-drive to Australia for the first time.
Based on the next-gen Toyota Prado, the new Lexus GX promises to ramp up the luxury appeal of Toyota’s popular off-roader.
It follows in the wheeltracks of the Lexus LX, a full-sized machine that transforms the Toyota LandCruiser into a leather-lined alternative to the likes of Mercedes-Benz.
Full details for the model will be confirmed closer to the GX’s arrival in the first half of 2024.
Until then, Lexus has announced that the car will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre petrol V6 engine linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission and a proper four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.
Available in the larger Lexus LX600, the motor makes 305kW and 650Nm when fitted to the brand’s range-topping SUV.
The new machine promises to deliver modern tech including a 14-inch touchscreen with sat nav and smartphone mirroring.
A seven-seat layout includes the option of centre-row “captain’s chairs” that spoil customers with premium leather trim.
Lexus Australia chief executive John Pappas said the GX takes Lexus into new territory.
“The GX is ideal for discerning customers looking for a sophisticated yet rugged full-size SUV to take the whole family camping and back again in true Lexus style,” Mr Pappas said.
“When it arrives in the first half of next year the GX will bolster our formidable luxury SUV line-up with its unmatched practicality.
“Large families with active lifestyles will appreciate the GX’s flexibility of carrying up to seven occupants. It is a true all-rounder, offering superb on-road manners and true off-road performance.”
The GX will share much of its hardware with a new Toyota Prado due to arrive locally in 2024.
Toyota has not unveiled the next-gen Prado, which should serve up similar off-road ability to the Lexus GX at a more affordable price.
