2022 Toyota GR 86 10th Anniversary Edition revealed

Toyota’s exciting new sports car is almost here.
The Japanese brand is preparing to launch the next-generation of its affordable GR 86 sports car this year, which is the latest addition to Toyota’s growing line-up of top-notch performance cars.
Now Toyota has revealed a special edition to commemorate the groundbreaking vehicle’s 10th anniversary.
Dubbed “GR 86 10th Anniversary Edition” it’ll be based on the new sports car and be limited to just 86 examples.
Toyota says the special edition will arrive soon after the regular GR 86 that is due to land in showrooms from September.
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s marketing chief, says there is no better way to celebrate the beloved coupe than with a special edition.
“Ten years ago, we launched the original Toyota 86 in Australia, creating a following for those wanting a sports car that blends reliable performance and great value,” says Mr Hanley.
The special edition adds plenty of cosmetic touches such as a new orange paint job and a black and orange colour scheme inside.
There is 10th Anniversary embroidery on the seats and door trim.
Toyota has been tight-lipped on details for the GR 86, but it shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Subaru BRZ.
It scores a bigger 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that in the BRZ makes 172kW and 250Nm. This is a big improvement on the 147kW and 205Nm produced in the original 86.
Toyota hasn’t revealed prices either, but it’s expected to be similar to the $42,000 drive-away price of its Subaru twin.
During a drive of a prototype version earlier this year the new GR 86 felt noticeably quicker than the previous version but maintained the sharp and well weighted steering of the old version.
Just like the original the new version is a hoot to drive thanks to its rear-wheel drive layout but benefits from upgraded tyres that add grip through corners.
Toyota will reveal full details of the new GR 86 and the 10th Anniversary Edition closer to the vehicle’s launch date.
