Celebrities have unclaimed money and so might you

FEDERAL Treasurer Scott Morrison has a surplus of his own to collect, thanks to a forgotten bank account. Here’s how to locate your missing money.

Lifehacks - Career

WHAT do Jodhi Tsindos, Scott Morrison and Karl Stefanovic have in common? They’ve all got unclaimed money.

LIFEHACKS: Forget the mortgage and clear credit card debt

You could too. Finding what’s rightfully yours could help ease the squeeze.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is holding about $1.1 billion in lost shares, bank accounts and life insurance.

State governments collectively hold hundreds of millions of dollars of unclaimed money as well.

Some of the sums in their possession are huge: $1 million or more.

ASIC has the shares, bank accounts and life insurance. The states hold funds from deceased estates, dividends, bonds, refunds and overpayments.

In preparing this story I discovered I had unclaimed money. It wasn’t much, but it wasn’t hard to get it back, either.

Further searching on my father’s name revealed he was owed five amounts.

There are some celebrities who should undertake such a hunt, too.

The former model now fashion designer Jodhi Tsindos, aka Jodhi Meares, is owed more than $2000 in two amounts, according to the NSW Government state register.

Her former father in law, the late Kerry Packer, forgot about $15,000, according to the ASIC database.

Former NSW Blues captain Paul Gallen has $437 to claim. It is from his former energy provider — yes, you guessed it, Origin.

Even Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison appears to have allowed $610 slip through his fingers from his time in Waverley in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. It was in a St George account and was declared lost in 2002.

Rugby league “immortal” Andrew Johns is also owed dosh, as are AFL stars Lance “Buddy” Franklin and Scott Pendlebury, plus former Test cricketer Matthew Hayden.

Karl Stefanovic appears to have mislaid some money as well.

Here’s a tip: if you’ve lived in different states try searching using the Victorian Government service, because it lets you search every jurisdiction at once.

You can reach it by typing www.tinyurl.com/allstatesearch into a web page on your phone or computer.

You will still need to do a separate search on the ASIC database.

Happy hunting.
