It’s a week out from Father’s Day. So this is a great opportunity to drop gift hints to your four kids...

What’s really good about Father’s Day is it’s not really about what I want; it’s more about what the kids want from the store they set up at school. They bring home something and they’re really excited about it.

Mugs are big. Mugs with “World’s Best Dad” written on it. They’re supposed to keep it a secret, but more often than not they blow it and let it slip two days before.

How will you spend the day?

With the whole family. We don’t necessarily go out for lunch. We might do a bike ride, or whatever the kids want to do.

You film away from home a lot. How do you juggle work and family life?

I’m lucky that my wife Renae [actor Renae Berry] has decided to stay at home with the kids until they’re all at school. I don’t have to do the juggling.

I think I get the easy job, being able to get to go away overnight and focus on career. Renae has it a lot tougher than I do.

This is your fourth season playing Dr Hugh Knight in Doctor Doctor. Do you feel confident dishing out medical advice to family and friends?

[Laughs.] To be honest, when I think of how much I have picked up, the answer is pretty much next to nothing. The short answer is: I wouldn’t trust me with your life.

Dr Hugh Knight was famously once a Cleo Bachelor of the Year. Were you ever nominated?

When I was 25 and I was doing my first job, the stage show Rent, I was nominated by a publicist for the show. I did a photo shoot, went along to a cocktail party... and was pipped at the post by the Blue Wiggle.

Would you ever do a musical again?

I wouldn’t say never, but it would be something I’d have to work towards and get a vocal coach. I don’t think I’d ever play lead with eight songs or something. But, you know, never say never.

Why Emma Hawkins isn’t your typical WAG

The character you play in ABC’s Glitch has risen from the dead. Which dead celebrity would you pick to have a chat with?

I grew up wanting to be a rock star, so I would choose one of those famous musicians who passed away at the magical age of 27 — Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix.

Australian men do pretty well as superheroes. Have you been tempted to head over to LA and make some Marvel money?

I’d have to work out a bit more. I think I’m getting past my expiry date for that [at 46], unless they have a new superhero called Middle-Aged Man or Captain Dad Joke.

As one of the nominees this year, what was your take on the Gold Logie situation? [Laughs.] I forgot about that, actually. At the end of the day, it is a popular-voted award ceremony.

Tom [Gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson] did a great job of engaging his audience and getting them to vote for him. How can anyone get upset about the winner of a popular vote?

Glitch Season 3 premieres 9.40pm tonight on the ABC. Doctor Doctor is returning soon to the Nine Network.
