Ever since tall, dark and handsome Tim Robards stepped out of a limo in the first-ever episode of The Bachelor Australia in 2013, we have been hooked on the popular dating reality TV series.
From its hilariously theatrical rose ceremonies and corny dates, to the gorgeous women with their big personalities and the endless mention of the word “journey”, the show has given us eight years of great memories. On the eve of the new season, the former contestants (and even a Bachelor himself) share their favourite moments from the series that has won their – and our – hearts.
Just like us, Bachelor contestants love watching the show, even when they’re not on it. Here are some of their favourite moments – as viewers.
Brittany Hockley: Season 6, Bachelor Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins
Favourite moment as a viewer: Similarly, I think a pretty huge moment from other seasons was on Season 2 when Blake Garvey chose Sam Frost in the finale only to have a brain fart and retract his decision, dump her and date the runner up.
Alex Nation: Season 4, Bachelor Richie Strahan
Favourite moment as a viewer: Abbie Chatfield grinding Matt Agnew on the beach on The Bachelor Season 7. I chose this for a few reasons. 1. It was sexy AF 2. It was bold AF. And 3. It set the tone for a sex positive movement, and I am so here for that.
Laura Byrne: Season 5, Bachelor Matthew “Matty J” Johnson
Favourite moment as a viewer: Oh my god, I have so many... dirty street pie is up there but I can’t go past Eliza St John in Season 4 singing to Richie on the red carpet. Iconic.
Abbie Chatfield: Season 7, Bachelor Matt Agnew
Favourite moment as a viewer: My favourite moment from any season is definitely Laurina Fleure and the Dirty Street Pie. I quote it far too often.
Laurina Fleure: Season 2, Bachelor Blake Garvey
Favourite moment as a viewer: I loved that avocado in the blender moment with Ivan on The Bachelorette Season 4 and the chick who nibbled on the rose in The Bachelor Season 2.
Mary Viturino: Season 7, Bachelor Matt Agnew
Favourite moment as a viewer: Last season with Locky had its moments as well.
My favourite was when on the first night of the series, the audience got to see Zoe telling the world why is so hard to be a lady with red hair.
Alisha Aitken-Radburn: Season 6, Bachelor Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins
Favourite moment as a viewer: There’s only one correct answer and it’s Richie and Alex Nation’s chocolate bath. Iconic. That scene lives rent free in my mind. If I don’t see the bath make an appearance in some way during Jimmy’s season I’ll be disappointed.
Matthew “Matty J” Johnson: Season 5, Um. Himself?
Favourite moment as a viewer: I was overseas for the first seasons, so Richie was my introduction to the Bachelor in Season 4. A moment that’s forever etched into my mind was during a date with Alex Nation.
They were finishing a beautiful day together by sharing a bath - except instead of water and rose petals it was filled with chocolate. It was a sizzling mix of naked bodies, melted chocolate, champagne, passion and roses. A dream combination that will go down at one of the most iconic moments in Bachelor history.
Special mention must go to Kayla in Bachelor Season 6, who jumped in the pool on night one (cocktail dress and all) to get the Honey Badger’s attention. Only problem was that he wasn’t even close to the pool and had no idea it happened.
Before we take off for another season of helicopter rides, candlelit dinners and champagne-fuelled catfights, let’s look back at some of the most memorable moments, as told by those at the very heart of the series.
Eight dashing suitors, 204 glamorous women, two weddings, five babies and one “dirty street pie”. With its unique blend of Mills & Boon-style romance and OTT reality TV drama, The Bachelor Australia has brought us countless characters and stories that have set hearts aflutter every year since its 2013 debut.
This week, Jimmy Nicholson becomes the ninth Bachelor, with 23 new ladies competing for the good-looking pilot’s heart. “There are multiple ‘Oh my God’ moments, and the majority of the time I had a smile on my face when it happened,” Nicholson tells The Binge Guide with a laugh. “I probably put my foot in it a few times, but I got myself out of it.”
Brittany Hockley: Season 6, Bachelor Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins
“I guess the most memorable moment was being in a position where I thought I had my happily ever after… only for there to be the biggest plot twist in Bachelor existence. Nick threw a fakey and didn’t pick anyone, leaving me in tears in my white dress and confused about what had just happened. Lol. I mean, you’ve got to laugh now, right?”
Alex Nation: Season 4, Bachelor Richie Strahan
“How could we forget the iconic chocolate bath. The meme dream! Without fail, every Easter I am tagged in that photo of me absolutely drenched in decadent chocolate. Absolutely timeless. It reigns supreme.”
Laura Byrne: Season 5, Bachelor Matthew “Matty J” Johnson
“I have a lot of favourite moments – meeting Matty, the first time we had a good, old snog, our first date, the first time we said ‘I love you’… but one of my most special memories was my hometown visit where Matt got to meet my Papa. Shortly after the season ended filming, my Papa had a stroke and he was never the same after it.
Not too long after that, he passed away. It meant so much to me that my Pa got to meet the father of my children and that Matt got a small glimpse into the wonderful man he was.”
Abbie Chatfield: Season 7, Bachelor Matt Agnew
“My favourite moment from my season was definitely Rachael [Arahill] having a Plan B with a crew member and not caring less when she was caught. Icon.”
Laurina Fleure: Season 2, Bachelor Blake Garvey
“When Amber [Gelinas] and I had it out after the rose ceremony and she accused me of being fake and I go: ‘You do realise you’re just projecting your own fakenesson to me’ and she flipped the bird as she stormed off.”
Mary Viturino: Season 7, Bachelor Matt Agnew
“I have a couple of golden moments on my season. The craziest one was the dog c**t saga. Abbie [Chatfield] decided to tell Matt that Monique [Morley] used that lovely term to describe him. The problem was Monique denied it and, indeed, it became a saga.”
Alisha Aitken-Radburn: Season 6, Bachelor Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins
“Can’t go past the episode we played ‘moon-hopping netball’, which quickly transformed into a full-on contact sport. Can always count on Bachie to concoct the most absurd ways to spark some love.”
Matthew “Matty J” Johnson: Season 5, Bachelor... Himself!
“There were so many moments from my season that I loved. Without wanting to get too mushy – but prepare yourself for mushiness – all of the dates I went on with Laura were incredible: our first kiss, paragliding over cliffs, naming our own star, swimming with elephants in Thailand.
But my favourite was at the finale when I told her I loved her for the first time. She was crying, I was crying, I’m pretty sure Osher even had a tear. It’s a moment I’ll never forget and always makes me smile.”
The Bachelor Australia premieres at 7.30pm on Wednesday on Network Ten.
