Uncle Joe's Mess
As grand as this place’s pulled pork bagels and bacon and egg sangas are, it’s the handiwork of gun pâtissier Charlotte Haygarth we love most. Salted caramel slices. Lamingtons filled with raspberry jam. The homemade Oreos. The anything-with-Nutella. Sweeten the deal with ace coffee and a street-smart barber shop and it’s very clear this Joe is far from average.
74-76 King St, city, 0417 783 222
Bossman
Caffeine aside, Bossman’s stock-in-trade is baked goods, predominantly of Greek, Middle Eastern and, as of last month, Vietnamese persuasion. And it’s recently joined forces with Mama Tran to open Mamaboss, a takeaway window on Milligan St spruiking early morning coffee and bánh mìs. Like a boss, all right.
Shop 3, 669 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley, 0410 348 641
Sprolo
While the vibe here is casual, owners Gabrielle Tan and Darren Woon take their coffee seriously, as evidenced by the micro-roasting venture (Blacklist Coffee Roasters) at the back of the shop. Left-field breakfast and lunch items are another defining feature – not least being the house-made kaya, which is eaten ad infinitum in Singapore and Malaysia, served with two sous-vide eggs.
138 Canning Highway, South Perth, 0401 625 134
Sherbet
Cute as a chocolate button, Sherbet is proof you can have your cake and should definitely eat it, too. Get a load of dinky cupcakes (at last count, customers could take their pick from 13 varieties including one topped with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup), excellent sweet and savoury muffins, and wickedly tempting slices.

The Little Concept
When is coffee not coffee? When, in the case of Red Espresso, it’s made with finely ground rooibos tea leaves instead of beans. Want soy, nut milk or some other dairy alternative in your drink? The Little Concept can oblige at no extra cost. Strapped for cash? No stress, there’s no minimum spend for EFTPOS. All of which shows owner Michael Allegretta’s accommodating nature. Factor in nutritious meals to go and it’s no surprise locals are buying into his customer-centred approach.

Standing Room Only
What this shoebox of a specialist coffee bar lacks in floor space, it makes up for in excellence. A high bean-rotation policy keeps things interesting not only for customers but also the enthusiastic baristas. One of the better coffee destinations in the CBD. Look for the A-frame blackboard in Piccadilly Arcade.
Piccadilly Arcade, Hay St, city
Felix & Co Specialty Coffee
With up to seven filter coffees and three espresso blends available at any one time, Felix & Co is bound to have the right coffee for you. In addition to sourcing beans from small-batch roasters around Australia, this coffee bar also has down-to-earth service, as well as a fun food program that includes great toasted sandwiches and city-famous banana bread.
8/160 Hampden Rd, Nedlands, 9386 9775
No 4 Blake Street
An ambitious fine diner come nightfall, No 4 Blake Street spends its days as an airy cafe serving interesting brunch fare: duck and potato hash with witlof, say, or an edible “garden” of chocolate, salted caramel and peanut butter. It’s a similarly wild ride on weekends with intricate high teas (think sugar-cured beef served on a black rice crisp). Tom Randolph is a chef worth following.
4 Blake St, North Perth, 9444 6678
La Veen Coffee and Kitchen
At La Veen, you come for the terrific coffee (including a cold range) and great baked goods and stay to coo at the heritage-listed building and its contemporary design styling.
90 King St, city, 9321 1188
Elixir Coffee Specialists
Armed with Elixir’s own house blend as well as a rotating roster of single-origin beans, crack baristas work their magic in espresso, filter and cold-brew form. Eats-wise, think muffins, house muesli and granola, and steak sangers.
